Keeping your Money Green: Green Funds and Green Investing

Environmental consciousness has spurred a new market for green funds and green investing options, allowing your money to be allocated to companies or funds that do not harm or directly contribute to the betterment of the environment. These funds may choose not to buy stocks in companies that have bad evironmental records, those that sell products in underdeveloped countries, and companies that contribute to health problems such as tobacco companies.

Green funds are great for those who refuse to put their money in mutual funds because they don't want their money going towards companies that they are stongly opposed to. It gives them a chance to earn a return which will compound over time while still practicing their beliefs.

How do you tell if you are investing in a Green Fund?

Making a green investment is increasingly easy given the increase and performance of overall SRI stocks and funds in today's financial markets.

Many large and small financial and investment companies now offer green funds that invest in companies that satisfy certain environmentally friendly criteria. Though they differ somewhat, most green funds and green investing focuses on companies that:

  • Directly support environmental awareness
  • Develop products and services to better the environment
  • Practice environmentally friendly and non-destructive manufacturing
  • Develop products using recyclable materials
  • Establish practices and goals to offset, eliminate or reduce their carbon emissions or "carbon footprint"

Given the increased awareness in environmental issues, many companies have taken it upon themselves to become more environmentally conscious, and this has led to an increase in the availability and diversity of green funds and green investing options.

Where to Begin Your Green Investing?

Work with a socially responsible investment advisor, who can help you establish a green fund and guide your green investment dollars into the right areas and funds. Almost every financial institution and investment firm will be able to offer you a host of green investment options, and many of these green funds and green investments perform as well as if not better than traditional investments.
