Articles and information on all topics relevant to Antiques.

An item of value, which is at least a hundred years old, is considered to be an antique. Sometimes, loosely used, the term antique reflects the age of the user. To a teenager, a toy from the 50s or 60s is an antique. Regardless of age, anything of collectible value can be found in an Antiques Shop. Antiques have aesthetic, historic and monetary value. In the early days, antique collecting was primarily preserving religious texts and artifacts. Towards the 20th century, antiques included items as quilts, jewelry, glass, coins, postage stamps, china, porcelain, silver and other metal craft, needlework, fans, watches, clocks, periodicals, badges, postcards, photographs, toys, posters, military souvenirs, buttons, in addition to paintings, books, and furniture.

Antique Appraisal - Antique Appraiser

For a good appraisal, you need to find an antique appraiser you can trust. If you have a lot of different items, hire a generalist first, who may then refer you to a specialist. To find out the appraisers' specialties, go through the published directories from the Appraisers Association of America or the American Society of Appraisers or the International Society of Appraisers. Except for a casual over-the-counter type of appraisal or the one offered at the Antiques Road show, antique appraisal almost always costs money. The charge is usually based on the time it takes to inspect the piece, do research and prepare a report if necessary. Appraisers who are auctioneers will often give free appraisals if you plan on auctioning off your piece. The selling price of an item may be higher or lower than the appraisal price. Appraisers must inspect the objects in person to give the right appraisal.

Antique Bottles

To assess a Antique bottle's worth, consider the following four factors - rarity, appearance, condition, and age. Generally, the rare, more attractive, the older the bottle is and the fewer flaws it has, the more valuable it becomes.

French Antiques

French antique dealers offer a personal selection of the most elegant French antiques of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. French antiques could be armoires, sideboards, tables, chairs, chest of drawers, lighting, sconces, chandeliers, mirrors, architectural and garden accessories, paintings, textiles and porcelain. Most European styles are represented, from Louis XIV, Regence, Louis XV, Louis XVI, Directoire, Empire, Charles X, and Louis-Philippe to the popular French Country style and even Biedermeyer. French farm tables make fine heirlooms. The hallmark of each piece is the patina.

Antique Sewing Machines

An Englishman, Thomas Saint is considered to have invented the first real sewing machine. But a machine made from his drawings could not be made without some modifications. All the essentials of a modern machine came into existence in 1844 when another Englishman John Fisher invented a working sewing machine.
