Buddhism Religion:
Buddhism founded in (566-486 B.C), is a religion popular in South and South East Asia and is increasingly popular in the West. Siddhartha Gautama who later came to be known as the Buddha or 'The Enlightened One' founded the religion of Buddhism after he attained true wisdom under a pipal tree at Bodhgaya. The major teachings of Buddha are The Four Noble Truths which are,
- the world is full of suffering
- suffering is caused by desire
- suffering can be removed
- in order to remove suffering one has to overcome desire.
According to Buddha these noble truths can be achieved by following the 'eight fold path', comprising of:
- Right view.
- Right thought.
- Right speech.
- Right action.
- Right livelihood.
- Right effort.
- Right mindfulness.
- Right concentration.
The essence of Buddhism religion is that life is filled with suffering. The main spiritual goal of Buddhism is to attain 'Nirvana', which means the spiritual liberation from the cycle of birth and rebirth. Gradually, Buddhism spread to numerous countries of the world, which resulted in development of the religion. A popular religious text in Buddhism is the Buddha Charitha. The place of worship of Buddhists is a vihara(temple). Some of the festivals common to this religion are Buddhist New Year, Vesak and Megha Puja Day. A holy place of Buddhists is Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha.
Zoroastrianism Religion:
Zoroastrianism is a religion that believes in the ultimate triumph of good over evil. It is one of the oldest religions founded by Zarathushtra in Persia. However after the arrival of Muslims the Parsis (followers of this religion) were forced to flee. A majority of them came to India and still live here though there are a number of them across the world particularly in Iran. The principal religious book of Parsis is the Zand Avestha that contains the teachings of Zarathustra. Their place of worship is the Fire Temple. Some of the festivals common to this religion are Pateti, Khordad Sal and Zarthost No Deeso.
Sikhism Religion:
Sikhism is a religion, which believes that there is only one god, one must adjust to the will of God and free oneself from all attachments. A saint called Guru Nanak founded the religion. The principal text of this religion is the Guru Granth Sahib. The place of worship for Sikhs is called the Gurudwara. Some of the festivals common to this religion are Gurupurabs, Baisakhi and Holla Mohalla. Amristar, Punjab in North India is considered the holy place of Sikhs.
