General home appliance information for consumers including money saving, purchasing and servicing tips, getting repair parts.

Tips on buying a Home Appliance

  • Efficiency and durability are the two most important factors to consider when buying a major appliance. Style is not the only criteria to selecting a home appliance. The amount of energy and water a home appliance consumes and the cost of maintaining should be taken into account. A major appliance like a refrigerator is tested for energy consumption, but how it is used and maintained also plays an important part in its performance.
  • Check the energy efficiency rating of major appliances like refrigerators and air conditioners.
  • Many websites and consumer publications offer comparisons based on home appliance brand names, features and prices. Before buying a major appliance, spend some time on researching these comparisons.
  • Make sure each appliance has adequate space (in the kitchen or utility room, wherever you propose to place it).
  • An appliance warehouse does not necessarily have the best buys. An appliance warehouse stocks items directly from the manufacturer, thus allowing us to buy a home appliance at a discount rate. But some smaller dealers pool their resources together to buy items in bulk at a discounted rate. They offer us an alternative to an appliance warehouse.
  • Check the value of warranty on the home appliance and its terms and conditions.
  • Find out about installation charges and requirements.
  • A used appliance may be cheaper, but has more risk in terms of repairs and services. If you have decided to buy a used appliance, buy a reconditioned one, preferably from a source that can offer a warranty.
  • Buy from dealers who provide authorized service, or where authorized service is nearby.
  • Keep the appliance owner manuals, receipts and warranty cards in a safe place.

Home Appliance Repair

An appliance, small or large, when properly maintained lasts for years and little repair is needed. When a household appliance stops working, we have two choices - repair the appliance or replace it. The following tips may help make a decision:

  • Get hold of the owner's manual and check up the troubleshooting tips. This is the first step in home appliance repair. If you don't have the owner's manual, look up the manufacturer's website on the Internet. The manufacturer's website may have some tips on home appliance repair and also an online version of the manual.
  • The age of the appliance and the warranty period must be noted. If the appliance is still under the warranty period, and the problem is covered, the cost of repair may be less, or sometimes no cost is involved.
  • The appliance repair cost is considered reasonable when it is about 50% of the price of a new appliance.
  • If the appliance is quite old, the replacement parts may be hard to find. This would mean buying a new appliance rather than repair an old one.
  • A newer, energy efficient model may mean considerable savings. The appliance pays off for itself over the years.

An home appliance repair manual has in-depth information on how to troubleshoot problems. The appliance repair manual contains detailed information about every part of the appliance, and its role in the working of the appliance. If you are adept at fixing things or are an avid do-it-yourselfer, you should consider getting the appliance repair manual. For those of us who are not too keen on fixing things ourselves, the appliance repair technician is always at hand.

Here's a handy tip to make small appliance repair jobs easier:
Keep some numbered resealable plastic bags handy. As you disassemble every part of the small appliance, put them into these bags. Assembling the appliance back together should not be too difficult now.
