Cosmetic tests on animals
Before launching a cosmetic product in the market the manufacturers
should make sure whether the product does no harm to human, to make sure testing
is usually done on animals. Only when the animals are not allergic to the cosmetics
it will be recommended for human. The most common tests are eye tests, skin
tests and oral toxicity:
-
Eye tests: substances are dripped into the eyes of conscious rabbits, who are
usually immobilised in stocks, and the resultant damage to the eye - such as
swelling, reddening and blindness - is scored according to severity.
-
Skin tests: substances are applied to the shaved and abraded back of a laboratory
animal (usually a rabbit, guinea pig or hamster) and the skin damage - such
as cracking, bleeding or ulceration - is scored.
-
Toxicity tests: animals are dosed, once or repeatedly, with a substance either
by oral-gavage (through a tube directly into the stomach) or forced inhalation,
so that the resultant toxicity (poisoning) effects on the animal can be noted.
Cruelty-free Cosmetics
A lot of animals are dying at the cost of human desire to
look good : shampoo is injected in to rabbits eyes, mice are forced to eat
rouges etc. In the western countries many major cosmetic manufactures declared
to stop animal experiments. In England and Germany animal experiments for cosmetics
are prohibited. In EU trade of cosmetics tested on animals are going to be
prohibited soon. Japanese major cosmetic manufactures, however, continue animal
experiments.
In some cases these testings are not necessary because about 8000 to 10,000
ingredients are branded to be harmless by using a range of non-animal testing
methods such as
-
cell toxicology
-
test tube (in vitro) techniques
-
sophisticated computer and mathematical modelling.
Techniques for marketing cosmetic products
Manufacturers follow many techniques to market there product,
2 techniques were discussed here under
Free Cosmetics
Consumers are attracted by the word “FREE”. Even though they don’t
need the product they like to try it one’s free of cost. Giving away
cosmetic products free of cost has become a marketing technique among the manufacturers
nowadays. Newly launched product will mostly have these free offers.
Free offers are give for cosmetic products mainly for 2 reasons one is to make
the customers get the feel of it and another important reason is to catch the
market. Publics were made aware of these free offers by various ways (1) Through
advertisements (2) Giving handouts (3) Giving away trial packs in main areas
(mainly for cosmetics trial packs will be given in colleges). Some times in
order to get the market one cosmetic product will be given free for some other
cosmetic product example a shampoo packet will be given free of cost for a
powder.
There are certain websites wherein you give your address and other details
which were asked for they will send you the free product samples, coupons and
occasional special offers.
Discount Offers
This is another technique followed by all the manufacturers to sell the product
in bulk or it can for one more reason that is to get ride of the old stocks
too. The rate of the product will be reduced to some extent such that consumers
will get 2 packs in the place of getting one.
