First Article Inspection - Manufacturing Quality Control

FAI refers to actions that are necessary to maintain high quality and verify the features and characteristics of a material, process, product, service, or activity to specified requirements.

FAI (First Article Inspection) :

Originally, FAI (First Article Inspection) just involved checking one component in the first batch. At present, FAI consists of the process monitoring of key characteristics. This is done in the FAI process to assure that parts can be manufactured continually, inexpensively, complying with the specification and with minimum disparity.

The FAI process consists of two discrete stages:

  • First Article Inspection: The FAI is a complete, independent, and documented physical and functional inspection process to verify that prescribed production methods have produced a fully conforming item as specified.
  • Component Proving

Manufacturing Quality Control :

Manufacturing quality control is important to build the product according to the specifications. Design quality is also important because a poorly designed product will not meet the needs of the customer. A variety of software, databases, robotics, and other technologies are employed by large organizations in the manufacturing quality control labs. Studying other organizations' best practices in manufacturing quality control, a company can better understand how to organize its quality control labs, allocate staffing resources, and gain recognition for quality control innovation.

CAPA (Certified Automotive Parts Association) :

The CAPA (Certified Automotive Parts Association) certifies the quality of automotive parts used for collision repairs. CAPA is a non-profit organization that ensures that the automotive parts meet strict quality standards for

  • Fit
  • Component materials
  • Corrosion resistance

The objective of CAPA is to promote price and quality competition in the collision part industry, and reducing the cost of crash repairs to consumers without sacrificing quality in the process. The CAPA program provides consumers, auto body shops, part distributors and insurance adjusters with an impartial method for evaluating the quality of certified parts and their functional equivalency to similar parts manufactured by automotive companies.

A nine member Board of Directors representing auto body shops, consumer groups, insurance companies and part distributors set the policies of CAPA. CAPA has a Technical Committee that performs periodic, in-depth reviews of the Standards, refining them as required to assure the continued quality of CAPA certified parts.
