Breast milk (or formula) is the ideal food for newborns. Solid foods can be started between four to six months of age, according to most health professionals. The first solid food should be a single-grain cereal like rice, fortified with iron. One or two spoons of cereal with enough breast milk (or formula) should be sufficient. Babies may not like the taste of solid food at first. Babies need time to get used to this new way of eating. Initially, the consistency of the cereal must be like thin gravy. With time, you can increase the quantity of cereal and its thickness. Pure fruit juices (100% fruit juices) can be given at this stage, either mixed with the cereal or in place of other liquids. At about seven to nine months, you can increase the variety of fruits and vegetables and the textures. Baby food prepared at home must be steamed and mashed well with a fork. Do not add any sweeteners, even honey or corn syrup. Chopped pieces of ripe bananas or dry unsweetened cereal are a good start on finger foods. At about ten to twelve months, soft or lumpy foods like well-cooked vegetables, cottage cheese or finely chopped meat can be introduced. Wash, peel, and dice fruits and vegetables before cooking them. Remove seeds and stones, if any. Cut off all the fat from meat before cooking it. Fruits and vegetables can be steam-cooked, boiled or microwaved. Do not overcook, as this results in loss of nutrients. A food blender or a mashing fork is a handy tool to mash food to the right texture for your baby.
