Garden Decoration

Garden landscaping involves arranging the features of the land around the house so as to improve its utility value and enhance the overall appearance of the property. Neatly manicured lawns, rows of flowerbeds and carefully positioned plants and shrubs make for a beautiful garden. Garden decoration is an art that encompasses many important essentials. Color, form, line, scale and texture constitute the basic elements of landscaping. Unity, harmony, focus, textures, forms, repetitions, balance and symmetry are all important when it comes to designing your garden, yard and lawn.

Landscaping

Landscape garden decoration consists of both hardscape designing as well as softscape designing. Softscape designing is primarily concerned with the animate horticultural elements such as plants, lawns, shrubs and trees. These need to be complimented by the hardscape elements such as stonewalls, tile partitions, brick walkways and stepping-stones.

Garden Decoration Planning

Before you begin your garden decoration, decide on the landscape layout and geometrical pattern. Selecting a particular theme for a garden can help in designing your decoration in an organized manner. Consider the type of flowers and plants you require. Select plants that thrive in your environment and lend themselves to geometric patterns and shapes. Factors like climatic conditions, availability of water and soil type need to be considered before you select the plants. Garden ornaments can enhance the overall effect.

Planning a garden

When landscaping your outdoors, keep in mind that the garden should complement the house. The natural landscape conditions should be considered: amount of sunlight, natural water drainage, slope of the land and the climate. Choose plants that go well with the home design. Use natural conditions to advantage like placing a waterfall on a sloping surface. Plants that are natural to the area will require less tending and will thrive better. Plants should be placed according to the amount of sunlight they need. Incorporate some year-round plants in order to avoid a vacant look during winters (or summers as the case may be). Getting a good soil mixture will go a long way in getting a thriving garden in place.

When planning the lawn, you can avoid sharp corners and thus save yourself a lot of mowing time. Group plants with similar needs for water, soil composition and shade. Plants in containers can enhance a garden design. These flowerpots can extend onto porches and patios creating a wonderful setting for a relaxed evening with family or friends. Rock gardens and Japanese gardens are popular these days. Exotic Japanese gardens with simple yet elegant rock and water arrangements have their own appeal.

Selecting Plants

While selecting the plants for your garden decoration, ensure that all the plants in your garden complement each other. Place the plants after careful consideration of their form and growth so as to obtain an aesthetic look. Be it garden decoration, lawn decoration or yard decoration, there are three important points to keep in mind while selecting garden plants. The proportion, transition and unity of the plants that are selected contribute towards obtaining the desired garden appearance.

  • The proportion or the size of the plants that you select should be consistent with each other and the entire landscape.
  • Transition is the manipulation of color, scale, line, form and texture to obtain a particular effect.
  • Avoid abrupt transitions that stand out like a sore thumb from the rest of the garden. Proximity and repetition of selected plants at preferred areas can help to obtain the desired uniform look and feel.

Placing deciduous trees to the south and west can help in reducing air conditioning costs in summer. Evergreen trees are best planted to the north and west of the house so as to serve as windbreaks. Shrubs around the house can create insulated dead air space around the house thereby reducing heating costs.
