If someone in your family needs round-the-clock medical care yet does not require hospitalization or has been released from the hospital, skilled nursing offers a wide range of services. There are several different types of skilled nursing facilities; some are independent, and others are part of a senior living community. But all skilled nursing home facilities have one thing in common: registered nurses are on site to provide 24-hour care and treatment of illness, injury or functional disability per a licensed physician’s instructions. Some seniors need skilled nursing services for just a short period of time, such as when recovering from a disabling injury or illness, while others require long-term care. Most nursing homes focus on rehabilitation so those clients who recover can return to their own homes. For those who can still live at home, skilled nursing care is also available on an intermittent or hourly basis. Most home health skilled nursing providers work in consecutive four-hour shifts and offer the same kinds of services as skilled care facilities.
Nursing homes provide a variety of skilled medical care for patients with physical, emotional, and mental conditions that render them unable to care for themselves. In additional to registered nurses, most facilities also have physical, occupational, and speech therapists. These professionals work with people relearn basic skills such as communication after a stroke, or to gain the strength to walk independently as well as eat, dress, and groom themselves. Nurses offer aid in treatments such as monitoring IVs, giving injections, and respiratory therapy such as ventilation. Most skilled nursing facilities are equipped to handle patients who require specialized care such as those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, chronic mental illness, Parkinson’s disease, chronic pain, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
At a skilled nursing facility, you should expect a clean, furnished shared or private room, well-balanced meals and snacks, housekeeping and linen services, recreational activities, some transportation, as well doctors’ supervision.
