Internet TV - Internet Security Camera

Television distributed via the Internet. Creating two major mediums/media together to create an overpowering single mass medium considered innovative and new form of streaming media is internet TV.

Internet TV

Convergence of media, computers and telecommunications marks the beginning of the digital age. The high point is the link between completely different technologies - analog and digital. Internet TV is one of the first examples of this convergence. It is the concept of accessing the Internet through the television.

An internet TV is ideal for those who would like to do a bit of browsing or send a couple of mails, but are not comfortable using a computer or are put off by the price. It was introduced in 1996, but was not very popular. However, with the introduction of state-of-the-art free Internet TV devices that go beyond providing basic internet access, Internet TV has come a long way. An Internet TV can be operated using a remote control just like ordinary TVs. Thus internet content is integrated with traditional video/video programs, giving the user the flexibility to control any application on demand. Moreover the wide range of Internet TV stations and video feeds made available to users have also helped to add on to the popularity. The basic free internet TV setup would include a modem that is connected to the telephone line, internal memory for storing web pages temporarily, an infrared remote device or keyboard, display circuitry and a processor.

Here is an outline of how Internet TV works
  • The Internet TV communication networks embed Internet content into the TV program/signal, which is then sent to the TV distributor
  • The Distributor broadcasts the TV signal with embedded Internet content
  • The Internet TV set-top box tunes into the TV signal, decodes and stores embedded Internet content on a disk to be viewed at a later time
  • The Web set-top box is connected to both the telephone jack and the TV set that provides access to the Internet

The internet service that is provided with the Internet TV device is quite inexpensive, when compared with the conventional charges. The charges may vary based on the extent and choice of Internet TV stations made available to the customer. Internet TV devices are available at computer and consumer electronic stores.

Web pages on TV look different from the ones seen on computer screen. To get around the limitations of TV resolution, bigger fonts are used that result in more scrolling. Internet TVs do not yet run operating system software, so its capabilities are limited, though the built-in browsers may support Real media or Java. Internet TVs may also incorporate a smart card for home shopping, banking and other interactive services in the future.

Internet Security Camera

The Internet security camera is not the conventional PC camera. The Internet security camera is a stand-alone device with a built-in CPU and web-based solutions and can transmit streaming data in real time. The real time streaming video can be accessed through any computer with internet access and does not require any special hardware or software. All that is needed is a web browser and internet access. Some Internet security camera manufacturers offer support for both ActiveX mode (for Internet Explorer ver. 5 and above) and Java mode (for Internet Explorer and Netscape ver. 6 and above). Internet camera manufacturers also provide support for TCP/IP SMTP HTTP and other internet related protocols. The Internet camera device can be used on any operating system and can be easily integrated into other internet/intranet applications. It thus becomes an integral part of the existing wireless network. Some provide both wired and wireless transmission and can be configured for Ethernet/fast Ethernet or wireless LAN. The Internet camera can be managed from its own web page. Some provide support for up to 64 users at a time. The wireless Internet camera can also be connected to other external devices like IR sensors, switches and alarm relays. The Internet security camera finds usefulness in a variety of applications like remote monitoring in homes, industries and public places, intruder detection, and broadcasting of live events over the Internet. The built in web server of an internet security camera can archive streaming video to the hard drive and can monitor as many as 16 cameras on a single screen.

To ensure highest security and prevent unauthorized usage, only the administrator has the privilege to manipulate the system administrator settings and control requirements. The administrator authorizes the level of entry and privileges for the users.
