Marathon History - Marathon Running Tips

Came from the name of great Greek soldier "Pheidippides", it is a long distance running event of 42.195 kms.

The marathon is commemorative of the messenger Pheidippides who ran 25 miles from Marathon to Athens to announce the victory of the Athenians over a Persian army. He collapsed soon after. Marathon History

The long-distance foot race was introduced at the first modern Olympics at Athens in 1896. Did you know that the marathon distance was established at 26 miles, 385 yards at the London Olympics in 1908? This was done so that participants starting at the Windsor Castle would finish their run at the Olympic stadium.

The oldest marathon is the Boston Athletic Association Marathon that began way back in 1897. The long distance walking marathon was set at 50 kilometers thus making it the longest track event. A walking marathon athlete can take anywhere from 4 to 9 hours for completing the marathon and this long stretch can cause blisters, chafing, sunburn and heat illness. Muscle strains and sprains are also likely to develop. Regular replacement of water and electrolytes is essential so as to prevent dehydration. Many marathon-running contests are being conducted to cater to the ever-increasing numbers of walkers and runners looking for a challenge. A marathon is a challenge on account of its duration. It is an ultimate endurance test for a runner as it depletes the body of glycogen and begins breaking down the protein in muscles and tissues to be used as fuel.

Marathon running is part of the track and field competitions at the Olympic games. It is the finale event in the Summer Olympics track and field event category. Well known marathon runners include Ethiopia’s Abebe Bilila, East Germany’s Waldemar Cierpinski and Kenya’s Ibrahim Hussein. Prominent American marathon running athletes were Bill Rogers, Alberto Salazar and Frank Shorter. Norway’s Grete Waitz was instrumental in putting women’s marathon running contests on the world map.
