Cholesterol Medicine - High Blood Pressure Medicine

Cholesterol is a fatty substance found in animal tissue and is an important component to the human body. It is manufactured in the liver and carried throughout the body in the bloodstream.

Cholesterol Medicine

Cholesterol is a lipoprotein, a soft waxy substance found amongst the lipids present in animal cells and body fluids. Cholesterol is vital for many of the body's functions. But too much of cholesterol builds up in the blood and clogs the arteries. This puts people at a risk for heart disease, heart attack and stroke. People also need to know about their total cholesterol levels - both the LDL (bad) cholesterol and HDL (good) cholesterol. Lipoproteins in the blood transport the cholesterol. The two most familiar lipoproteins are low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). LDL transports cholesterol from the liver to other body tissues and deposits excess cholesterol on the walls of the arteries thus clogging the arteries and contributing to the development of heart disease. Unlike LDL, HDL helps remove excess cholesterol from the blood by transporting it back to the liver where it can be eliminated. Apart from diet and exercise, cholesterol medicine can help improve cholesterol levels. Cholesterol medicine like statins, fibric acid derivatives, bile acid binders and niacin (a form of Vitamin B3) can be given to lower the cholesterol levels.

High Blood Pressure Medicine

Deciding to treat someone with high blood pressure with medicine and choosing the best medicine depends on factors like:

  • Blood pressure level
  • Signs of organ damage due to hypertension
  • Other medical conditions
  • Willingness to make lifestyle changes

High blood pressure medicine includes diuretics, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) (such as losartan) and vasodilators. High blood pressure medicine like calcium channel blockers and/or ACE inhibitors are used only if diuretics and beta-blockers fail to control blood pressure and other risk factors are present.

Arthritis Medicine

Premature cardiovascular disease is a major life-threatening complication of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Treatment with statins could have an important role in controlling joint inflammation and preventing heart complications. Simvastatin significantly reduced inflammatory activity in a mouse model of arthritis. Atorvastatin used in combination with traditional RA disease modifying agents was found to be effective in modifying the lipid profile and the underlying inflammatory disease activity in RA patients.
