Difference between a REALTOR and a Real Estate Agent
You may or may not know there are some subtle yet important differences between a realtor vs. a real estate agent, and while both can assist you in buying or selling a home, its important to know these differences exist.
Although both a realtor and real estate agent are licensed to sell or assist in the purchase of homes, a realtor is a professional who is a member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR), and, as a result, is legally and philosophically bound to the national association of Realtor Code of Ethics.
While the chances are any real estate agent is ethical, for many, this added security of knowing the NAR code of ethics is there is an important issue, and one that drives the decision whether or not to go with a realtor vs. real estate agent.
What is the NAR Code of Ethics?
The National Association of Realtor Code of Ethics is essentially the standards for fairness and ethics that all licensed Realtors swear and are bound to uphold. The code is strictly enforced and adhered to, and while there is no guarantee that a licensed Realtor will do so, the realtor code of ethics at least provides a level of accountability.
The code provides a list of standards, such as fair representation of prices and market conditions, disclosure rules, putting the interests of the client above all, and full disclosure of commission, among many other codes in the NAR code of ethics.
So, Which Should I Choose?
By and large, any licensed real estate agent will provide you a fair level of service, so deciding whether to use a realtor vs. real estate agent may come down to personal preference. Referrals are one of the best ways to find a realtor or real estate agent, so ask around your friends and coworkers. You also can check with the local Chamber of Commerce or Better Business Bureau.
