Job Fair

Job fair and career fair are events where representatives of a number of companies are present at a single venue to meet prospective employees. Job fairs are non-profit events and are often promoted by the state's employment commissions. Job fair has the unique advantage of providing job seekers an opportunity to meet many prospective employers on a single day. For entry-level job seekers, a job fair gives a chance to hone their interview skills, gather information about local employers and gain some insight into the job requirements of the employers. Before the event, job seekers should do their homework and arm themselves with the following:

  • Knowledge of the number and type of employers represented at the fair
  • A general idea of the fair organization and booths of different employers, especially if the job fair is a huge event
  • Updated resume
  • A questionnaire to ask each employer

Though job fairs are frequented by graduates, sophomores and juniors also participate in job fairs to gain exposure to the market and receive invaluable career advice from the various employer representatives. The California State University at Long Beach organizes Students job fair in the spring every year. The three main careers related events organized by the University's Career Development Center are Engineering, Science and Technology job fair and Education job fair.

Benefits of a Job Fair

Job fairs benefit both the job seeker as well as the employer. It gives an ideal opportunity for the employer to collect a number of resumes that can be stored in the database for future needs. Most of the resumes are collected and screened by the job fair organizers before the actual event thereby eliminating the need for prospective employers to check the candidate's background. These fairs are an occasion where the employers' organization or business can be promoted among the job seekers and the number of students that attend. Moreover job fairs are publicized in many of the local and industry-relevant publications, providing a wide exposure to the employers attending the fair.
