WTA Tennis
WTA tennis is the world’s premier professional tennis tournament for women. WTA tennis tour is a non-profit organization with headquarters in St. Petersburg, Florida and London. WTA tennis draws television viewership from across the globe. WTA tennis has seen all-time tennis greats like Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Monica Seles and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario. Steffi Graf reigned supreme for years on end. Today, the WTA tennis circuit is dominated by Martina Hingis, the Williams sisters Venus and Serena, Lindsay Davenport and Mary Pierce. Anna Kournikova has added a touch of glamour to the WTA tennis court.
The Virginia Slims Circuit started in 1970 was a predecessor of sorts to the current WTA tennis Tour. Women tennis players were getting but a third of the prize money as compared to the men’s singles champions. Tired at this discrimination and after vocal protests, a group of women players along with their chief campaigner Gladys Heldman decided to stage a tournament of their own. This led to their suspension by the USTA thus rendering them ineligible for Grand Slams and other tournaments authorized by any national tennis association. With Billie Jean King as a driving force, the women stuck to their ground. Thus was born the WTA tennis Tour.
Martina Navratilova was honored for completing a lifetime ‘Super Slam’. On winning the Australian Open Mixed doubles, she became the first player to win the singles, doubles and mixed titles at all four Grand Slams.
